IELTS Academic reading is often about more abstract ideas, contains more complex sentence structures and more sophisticated vocabulary than General Strand reading.
The Academic reading consists of three pieces of writing with increasing density of meaning. The General strand reading also has three parts, also of increasing difficulty, but the first part (G) contains questions which require literal understanding I.e., the answer is 'right there' in the text, the second part usually requires a good lexical knowledge ( synonyms) , and the third part requires inferential understanding, I.e. reading 'between the lines'.
